Scripting

An author orchestrates characters, and a
script is followed.
In the book of website design ( if there ever was one !) the
author would use characters to present a story. Orchestrating
what they do and how they act unfolds the story as the book
is read. So too a script. In this case the story is the whole
function of the script - what it does - and the characters
are pieces of code(lets) which present the functions.
Very simple
websites usually require no scripts. More complex ones
may
require small
scripts
to
make
the website
automated in some way - like collection of data from an
input form, or provide date and time information to display
correctly.
Sometimes this script, or code is embedded the overall
code which makes up a page. More often larger scripts are encased
in their own files and stored in an area on the host machine.
These file are accessed each time a page loads to display
pieces of information on the page itself.
Some examples; scripts may be used for :
- date and time displays
- a guest book for signing and leaving a message
- to send an electronic postcard from a website
- collecting data in a form that is submitted from a website
- a voting poll on topical subjects of the day
- an onscreen calculator
- linking database information contained in separate areas
on a web server to display it on a web page
